Press releases from the City of Destiny
MATT DRISCOLL: LOOKING BUSY FOR THE BOSS >>>
It’s been kind of a slow news day here at the Weekly Volcano. It’s enough to make a guy wish there was another submerged car out there at the bottom of some little used lake. Anything would be good.
We did receive a couple press releases from the City of Tacoma today worth passing along.
First of all, Tacoma is looking for a few new members for the Disabilities Commission. Here’s a look at the full release:
Disabilities commission seeking new members
The Tacoma Area Commission on Disabilities is recruiting new members to serve one, two, and three year terms. If you are passionate about creating equal access for people with disabilities, you are encouraged to apply.
The commission is particularly interested in individuals with knowledge of disability rights and cultural aspects of people with disabilities, as well as accessibility of buildings, public rights-of-way, programs and activities.
Commission members are appointed by the Tacoma City Council, and are required to attend monthly meetings. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. Applications are available at www.cityoftacoma.org/hrhs or by calling Gail Himes, City of Tacoma ADA coordinator, at (253) 591-5785 (TTY (253) 591-5153), and must be submitted no later than Sept.12, 2008.
Secondly, Tacoma’s 37th annual “Senior Citizen Appreciation Day” will go down on Wednesday, Aug 20. Those in the know just call it SCAD. Here’s a peak at what the City of Destiny has to say about the event:
37th annual Senior Citizen Awareness Day, Aug. 20
You won’t want to miss this year’s Senior Citizen Awareness Day carnival on Aug. 20 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. The 37th annual event will honor Tacoma and Pierce County seniors and their families with a day of fun, education, information and entertainment from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
More than 70 for profit and non-profit service agencies, organizations, and businesses will participate in the event by providing information to seniors and their families about various services. This is an opportunity for seniors and their families to meet directly with the providers that are able to enhance, improve and increase their independence and quality of life.
The carnival style entertainment includes music from Casanova, Pookie the clown magician, an illusionist and Bob Bailey, a comedic juggler. There will also be many clowns, a roving magician, face painting, caricature painting and a balloon artist parading the floor.
Admission and parking for the event are free. Four concession stand lunch options will be available for seniors to purchase for $3 dollars from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; there will be no complimentary boxed lunches offered.
For additional information, call the Human Rights and Human Services Department at (253) 591-5151 or TTY (253) 591-5153.
