WORDS
Go Literati
Wordsmiths alike are invited to attend the poetry workshop: Illumination and the Literary Imagination, presented by Urban Grace and the Tacoma Art Museum tonight. Writers will examine the museum’s visiting exhibit of the Saint John’s Bible, a contemporary work created in the tradition of handwritten medieval manuscripts. It is the first handwritten Bible commissioned in over 500 years. William Kupinse, Urban Grace’s Poet Laureate of Tacoma for 2008-09 and associate professor of English at the University of Puget Sound, will facilitate. — Tammy Robacker
[Tacoma Art Museum, 5-8 p.m., free with admission, 1701 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, 253.272.4258]
ART
Art Doors
A door is a weighty thing in literature. It represents both a divider and a portal, a way to keep people out or a means of allowing people in. The metaphorical possibilities are endless. And, practically speaking, it’s not a bad idea, either, just to keep intruders out and such. Well, now you can see both options explored simultaneously at Art Doors, a benefit party for Glassroots Arts Festival. Full details here. — Suzy Stump

ROCK
Flowmotion
A bit Grateful Dead-ish, Flowmotion appeals to jam band aficionados and those who don’t just listen to music but experience it. However, don’t lump these guys in with Dave Matthews or Widespread Panic as Flowmotion knows how to rock and aren’t afraid to turn up the heat. Formed in 2001 after guitarist/vocalist Josh Clauson caught a local jazz fusion band by the name of BeeCraft play live, the members of the band signed up with Clauson, and the rest, as they say, is history. — Tony Engelhart

ROCK
Vinyl Williams
Earlier this year, Vinyl Williams released a debut EP — ripe with nu-rock screamers and shrills only a Hot Topic crowd could appreciate. Luckily for Vinyl Williams, Hot Topic does good business. This band has that tortured sound that kids everywhere go gaga for, and that makes elders wonder what the hell happened to music. It’s a sound that, despite his age, makes Bobble Tiki grin.
Vinyl Williams has experienced some success in Utah, and is eager to expand on that success on their first real tour — which, as mentioned, will bring Vinyl Williams to Le Voyeur tonight. — Bobble Tiki
